10 Things I Actually Use in My Garden

I've been gardening in Zone 9 California for years. These are the things I kept reaching for — not a wishlist, just what works.

I didn't buy any of this at once. I added things slowly, usually after getting frustrated with doing it the hard way first.

The 10 Things I Actually Use

1. Raised Garden Bed
Zone 9 clay soil is not your friend. I resisted a raised bed for longer than I should have — once I set one up, I stopped fighting the ground and started actually growing things.

2. Organic Soil Mix
I've tried cutting corners on soil. You can't. A decent organic mix is the single thing that separates plants that sulk from plants that take off.

3. Compost
My garden changed when I started adding compost regularly — not dramatically, just quietly, steadily better. Everything seems to appreciate it, from the roses to the succulents.

4. Seed Starter Kit
Starting seeds indoors in late winter used to feel hit-or-miss. A proper starter kit — consistent moisture, good drainage, a lid — makes a real difference in germination rates.

5. Large Planters
Some of my best-performing plants are in containers — it lets me move things around as the seasons change, which in Zone 9 matters more than people think.

6. Drip Irrigation Kit
Our summers are long and dry. Hand-watering every day stopped being sustainable — the drip system runs quietly in the background and honestly my plants are happier for the consistency.

7. Watering Wand
Essential for anything newly planted or delicate. A wand lets you water at the base without beating seedlings down — I use mine almost daily in spring.

8. Garden Kneeler & Seat
I ignored this for years, thinking it was unnecessary. I was wrong. If you spend any real time in the garden, your knees will thank you for this.

9. Pruning Shears
Good pruners are worth the investment — I use mine on roses, salvias, jasmine, you name it. A clean cut heals faster and the difference in quality really shows over time.

10. Garden Gloves
I go through these regularly — between the roses and the succulents there's no shortage of things that will scratch you. A pair that actually fits makes all the difference.
